Hades, god of the Underworld, fell in love with Persephone and wanted her as his bride. His brother Zeus consented to the marriage? Yet he warned Hades that Demeter would never approve this coupling, for she would not want her daughter spirited off to a sunless world.
At Zeus's suggestion? Hades resolved to abduct the maiden. Persephone was gathering flowers one day on a plain in Sicily. Hades suddenly appeared, thundering across the plain in his four-horse chariot. The god swooped down upon Persephone, scooped her up with one arm, and literally and figuratively deflowered her? The appearance, abduction, and disappearance happened so swiftly that none of Persephone's companions witnessed the kidnapping.
And though she called out to them? The earth opened up before Hades' chariot and the god drove the jet-black horses down into the chasm.
As Hades and Persephone disappeared into the depths, the hole closed up behind them. Demeter soon came to collect her daughter, but could not find a trace of Persephone. Distraught and desperate, Demeter searched high and low for her daughter. She traveled to the farthest corners of the earth, searching for nine full days and nights without ever stopping to eat, drink, bathe, or rest.
Demeter was in a fury. She destroyed lands, crops, and livestock as she bewailed the loss of her daughter. She threatened to make the earth barren forever and thus destroy all of humankind if she did not find Persephone. The painful separation of mother and daughter has been a common theme in mythology from Greece to Indonesia.
Carl Jung, the pioneering psychologist and scholar of mythology, saw in such tales the universal pain of this ordeal? Ares is shocked with the way their handling the "confrontation" and Persephone soon feels weak as his powers wear off on her.
Hades is furious at Ares and takes Persephone away where the two talk about Alex and he apologizes for his actions. They continue to talk and admit that there is a strong connection between them but because of his relationship with Minthe and her commitment to her scholarship and TGOEM, the two come to an agreement to slow down. They go to the hospital after Persephone convinces Hades to return Alex's eye. He asks her to step outside so she wouldn't see him in his true form but unknown to Hades, she sees him through the window and her powers react and make her go through a "second puberty.
Hades debates telling her how he truly feels but worries that if he did, it would make things harder for the two. He decides to agree to the rules before leaving but is internally screaming in his head, calling himself a coward for not telling her. He quickly turns around and goes to her front door, seemingly changing his mind but this backfires as Hestia is the one to open the door.
Seeing Hestia's anger, the two quickly cover up why he's there, prompting him to stay longer and watch as Hestia shows Persephone her ceremonial gown.
A frustrated Hades goes to Zeus's code red and arrives just as Ares goes to attack Zeus and he accidentally hits Hera. The fighting stops and the brothers leave to the Mortal Realm where he finds a new puppy. When they return to the Underworld, he wishes to send Persephone a picture of his new puppy but decides against it as it would break the rule of contacting Persephone after 9 PM.
He feels as though they broke up before being a couple and hopes she knows he'll still be there to help her. He then request to be her friend on Fatesbook. It's not until Hades has a dream of Persephone and him being married and have a infant son that he comes to terms with his feelings and breaks up with Minthe. Minthe asks if he is in love with Persephone and although he says it's too early to tell, a child like image of himself argues that he loves Persephone more then anything.
She jealously tells him that he's too messed up to pursue Persephone, to which Hades responds that regardless of whether he and Persephone work out, his relationship with Minthe is over. Hades and Persephone attempt to follow the rules to slow down their relationship and Hades soon discovers it was Persephone's birthday when Hermes arrives to give her balloons. He becomes self conscious and states he truly knows nothing about her.
He introduces her to his new dog Meli , but she jokingly calls her Pomelia, a nod to the flower she gave him days prior. He helps her get a bank account and Persephone learns about Hades and Minthe's breakup through Eros, making her feel guilty and thinking it was her fault but he assures it that it isn't. In Episode , after a brief argument over Persephone going to the beach to give coins to the shades, Hades admits to Persephone that he wants her and the two share a passionate kiss.
However, Persephone unintentionally turns into butterflies and leaves him. He feels he messed up their relationship by telling her the truth and not having enough self control despite being thousands of years old.
Persephone later calls Hades when she has trouble sleeping and the two discuss their kiss where she reveals that her body reacted in a way she never expected because she got excited. The two fall asleep in her bedroom despite Persephone knowing she could get in trouble.
The next morning, they wake up together when Hades has to go home to feed his dogs, he ask her to come with him to have breakfast. In seconds, she's ready to go and the two return to the Underworld where they spend the morning together, enjoying each other's company before she leaves. After she left, Hermes arrives and gives Hades the videotape of their first meeting.
Much to his shock and embarrassment, he discovers the truth of their first meeting and that Demeter had given him more alcohol in order for him to forget. Artemis soon arrives with Eros and Ampelus after they aren't able to find Persephone and he then brings Hecate in to help him. He finds the hair comb he gave her in a pawn shop and begs the owner for help on her location, realizing that threats and anger would not help him.
When he shows Eros the hair comb, Eros is in shock and tells Hades that she loved the comb more than anything which slightly shocks Hades. Hecate then calls him to watch the announcement of Persephone and Demeter being charged with treason and having a warrant for their arrest, He goes to meet Zeus and Poseidon and after Zeus threatens to punish Persephone, he threatens to retaliates. He soon finds Persephone almost close to hibernation and Hades pleads over her body in tears, begging her to wake up and desires for the two to go Sicily and have her show him around his old home.
She wakes up and Hades returns the hair comb to her and lets her stay in the Underworld, letting her tell the truth about her act of wrath. After hearing her out, he shows her the tape of their first real meeting and while she finds it funny, he is still embarrassed.
He then opens up to her by telling her the story of his parents, how he was saved by Zeus, and gained his scars. Hades decides to go to work and after some debating, he brings her and hides her with the cloak of invisibility. When they make it to his office, Minthe is there and goes to remove her robe, revealing she wore lingerie underneath. He quickly ties her robe up up and Minthe snaps at Hades for being "still up her ass" which prompts Hades to call her back on her hypocrisy with Persephone being "too perfect" and now being "too wrathful" for him.
He says that she can be both and gestures to a furious Minthe to leave. Persephone removes the cloak and Thanatos, having been kicked out by Minthe, watches the two together and realizes that Hermes was right about Persephone being Hades' favor.
When Zeus orders Hades to hand over Persephone, Hades refuses which causes the brothers to argue and make Zeus lash out by telling him that Persephone was only using him but Hades knows he only said it to hurt him. The two spend the rest of their days in the Underworld in peace as he teaches her to golf, gets her a new "garbage" phone, watch movies, and continue to work as they await for the trial to come. In Episode , Hades and Persephone go shopping which leads to their second kiss and have brief make out session before they stop when she almost disappears again.
They talk about her desire for him but how her worries and insecurities are making her feel block. He assures her that a kiss can just be a kiss and that the timing of their relationship isn't ideal but once the trial is done, he will take her out on a date, which signals the start of their relationship.
After shopping, the two would go swimming but later that night, Hades wakes up after having a nightmare of his Father, Kronos, devouring Persephone. When seeing him outside her bedroom door, she lets him stay in her bed and rest his head on her shoulder while showing him a video to relax him. He opens up about his nightmare and she assures him that she is safe. Unknown to them, two workers had caught the two kissing and rumors started spreading all over the Underworld that the two were now in a relationship and the people reporting the make out as a "steamy.
Hearing her confession cause both of them to transform into their true form and chase after her. After accidentally cursing Minthe, Persephone tells Hades about her fear of Minthe getting fired or the two breaking up if she told him that Minthe sent her to Tower 4. They admit their attraction to one another in their true forms, When Hecate arrives and ask what happen to Minthe, Persephone admits it was a mix of rage but mild arousal from seeing Hades in his true form, shocking Hades when he hears this.
The flower nymphs from the Mortal Realm arrive but Persephone fears that Hades will not like them while Hades fears they would not like him. After finding them, Hades welcomes them to his home and the nymphs give their approval of their relationship, especially when the two dance together for the first time. During the dance, Persephone ask what Hades would have done if they had met at the party and he jokingly states he would have crumbled at her feet.
When he pulls her in his arms, he whispers into her ear what he would have told her that night if she would have accepted a dance from here. However, Apollo and Artemis's mother Leto sneaks into the Underworld and tells Persephone how he once asked Hera to be his queen, something he had yet to tell Persephone himself.
This revelation sends Persephone spiraling and decide to see a therapist to help her deal with constantly feeling overwhelmed. Hades senses the distance between them and worries he may have overstepped when the two danced and arrives to pick her up with a bouquet of flowers.
While driving back home, he apologizes if he overstepped but she then confronts him about Hera, which catches him off guard and hit the breaks in his car. Hades shows deep regret over the affair and not telling Persephone sooner. The two arrive at his home where he tells her the story of him and Hera and when she asks if he had any lingering feelings for Hera, he assures her that the two are officially and forever done but he will always care and respect her as the two have gone through a lot.
In the story he tells her how they won the war against his Father, Hera and him growing closer after she was seriously injured, and how he became King of the Underworld, something he was hesitate to talk to her about when they were starting to become friends. With the story done, Persephone tells him how inadequate she feels knowing that Hera, someone she greatly looks up to, and him were once together but Hades assures her that the affair was based on his desire for intimacy and Hera wanting to get back at Zeus for his affairs.
Hades reveals his fears of Persephone looking down on him for having an affair but Persephone tells Hades she's grateful to have heard the story for him. She goes to lay down on his lap and tells him how she hates being caught off guard which prompts Hades to take her to Tartarus, wanting her to be completely aware of all the cons that come with being in a relationship with him. He continues his story about his journey to the Underworld where many of the inhibits rejected him as King.
Refusing to go back to Zeus for help in fear of him seeing him as weak and wanting to quickly imprison his Father before his strength return, he was quick to act.
He soon found Erebos, a being of darkness with no physical form, who asked if he truly wished rule the domain, and if so, would have to make a sacrifice. Hades went over to a pomegranate tree, the only living thing to grow a single pomegranate, and ate it. He woke up as the the King of the Underworld but he is unsure of what was taken from him when he consume the fruit.
He tells her how he is unable to stay away from the Underworld for long and how it may have been the reason he is unable to have children. He starts to shutter but Persephone comforts him with a hug, accepting everything she's heard.
They head home where he answers her questions, including if she would ever need to eat the pomegranate to be seen as Queen if they were to ever married. When all questions are done, she request that they take a picture together which he nervously accepts. When Hades is having a meeting with his nephew Hephaestus, he notices him staring at Persephone through the glass window.
He is quick to invite Persephone in and excitedly introduces the two. When Ares arrives unexpectedly, Hades suddenly grabs and holds Persephone in his arms. As Ares and Hephaestus are talking, Hades waits outside with Persephone and suggest the two grab a muffin in the cafeteria. When she wishes to stay to see whats happening with the brothers, he playfully teases her about wanting to stay and hear the gossip.
She then shows him her ability to bring a dead plant back to life inside the room but this leads to Hades killing it with his powers and a playful cycle starting between with the two. Hephaestus, fed up with the two playing around, orders them to flirt somewhere else, leaving the two flustered and apologize to him. The two are later seen back in his apartment cooking before Hermes arrives and delivers the message that Zeus has Demeter and Persephone's trial will begin the next day.
Hades is furious but Persephone accepts her fate and reminds Hades that she must go and ensure her Mother is safe. After Hermes leaves, Persephone feels sick and leaves to throw up.
Hades is outside the bathroom door and despite Persephone's protest that him seeing her throw up would ruin the mystique, he assures her he's fine and has water for her. She allows him to enter and he pulls her in his arms where she cries over the upcoming trial and fear of the unknown.
She asks him if she can remain in the Underworld after her trial and while Hades says yes, he ask why she wouldn't want to return to Olympus. Persephone begins to cry again and Hades gently lays her down on his lap and tells her they'll find her a beautiful apartment that's close by so the two can continue to visit one enough.
She eventually cries herself to sleep and he carries her to her bed before making a threatening phone call to Zeus, warning him of the consequences that would follow if he proceeded with the trial.
The trial begins and Hades arrives with Persephone with reporters all in shock to see the King of the Underworld is not joining Zeus but supporting Persephone. Reporters were quick to see Persephone wearing the pomegranate insignia, which was given to her by Hades after their kiss at the mall days ago. Hades states he had no intentions of blindly following his brother and Persephone was quick to dismiss reporters questioning her relationship with Hades.
When it becomes overwhelming, Hades pulls her to keep walking until they discover that Apollo is petitioning Zeus for her hand in marriage. Persephone calls it pathetic before the two go inside and Persephone starts to get fearful over the possibility of it being true but Hades comforts her. When Persephone gets worried about her eyes, which have stayed red since the night before, Hades states she is beautiful before leaving her to speak to her Mother in private. After dropping her off, Hades, now furious over the news, goes to confront Zeus and discovers Apollo in the room as well.
Apollo claims that Zeus was indeed going to marry Persephone off to him and that it was time Hades and Persephone stopped playing house. Hades starts to transform into his true form and states he's noticed Apollo been going after his wife for months and hasn't gone unnoticed. Apollo notices his statement of calling Persephone his wife which catches Hades off guard and stutters, saying he misspoke. After Zeus orders Apollo to leave, Hades glares at Zeus who claims he only told Apollo he would reconsider the marriage but never actually planned on allowing it to happen.
Hades tells Zeus that Persephone is scared of Apollo before deciding to leave. As everyone arrives in the courtroom, Persephone ties to get her own lawyer and though she is denied at first, Hades and Persephone look at each other and nod.
Persephone recalls a loophole in the law that allows her to chose her own lawyer and then choses Hades who accepts despite the glares of Zeus and Demeter, who is now becoming suspicious of Persephone and Hades' relationship.
Hades comes to Persephone's side and comforts Persephone as she cries over her Mother's anger. She tells Hades that Demeter is indeed withholding information about her. Hades assures her that they have prepared for the worse. Zeus then has Polymnia tell the courthouse a recap of Persephone's act of wrath and describes Persephone as seducing Hades in order to protect her.
Hades comforts her by telling her Polymnia said it on purpose to get Persephone upset. As Hermes testify and tells the story of how the two became friends and helped cover up her crime, Hades looks at Persephone with concern. While Hades is upset over the fact Hermes did this behind his back, he shows no angry over Persephone. Thanatos arrives to testify and reveals his reasons for why he felt Persephone was suspicious and believed she was deceiving Hades while receiving special treatment from him.
Finding it hard to believe that the investigation into Persephone was for his own well being, Thanatos tells Hades that Thetis was the one who came up with their plan as a way for Hades to see who Persephone really was so he could leave her and reunite with Minthe.
When Thetis arrives to show Minthe was cursed by Persephone, Persephone nervously grabs onto Hades and asked how she could have gotten her, making Hades respond back that he has to work on his security. Thetis attempts to prove Persephone is dangerous and "killed" Minthe to be with Hades but Persephone defends herself by telling the court how she accidentally cursed Minthe.
Thanatos, now fed up with Thetis' schemes, explains how Thetis planned this for the sole purpose of having Minthe get back together with Hades, Thetis fires back that Thanatos broke into Artemis and Persephone' house to get Persephone's ledger. Persephone is furious to discover this and accidentally reveals that other "people" have entered her room without her permission.
She apologizes for her outburst to which Hades says there was no need too but asks who else has gone into her room. She dismisses the questions and Hades, although now concerned, drops the subject. As Thanatos reveals he broke in to her bedroom to find her ledger, Zeus shows it in court and claims to have found "proof" that Persephone has been undermining Hades the entire time.
As Zeus attempts to push Persephone into confessing that plans and blueprints found meant for her to use against Hades, he grabs Zeus tie and tells him to shut up so Persephone could defend herself.
Persephone reveals she not only included the names of the lives she accidentally took but she had been coming up with plans to create a place for exceptional mortals instead of them being placed in various levels of purgatory or Tartarus.
With this, she reveals she has no desire to return to Olympus or the Mortal Realm, which greatly infuriates Demeter and ask about her duty to spring to which Persephone argues that the Mortal Realm doesn't need her. Persephone turns to Hades and tells him she wishes to help him as she feels she could make a difference in the Underworld if he gave her the chance.
She gives him the ledger and states she wanted to show him her project in a more professional manner. When asking if he believed her, Hades questions if the drawings she included were how she saw herself in his realm to which she agrees. When Hades gets up, he orders Thanatos to grab her a chair before he turns to Zeus and expresses his anger over him believing her ledger was proof of treason and that it was hard for him to imagine Persephone would do something nice for him just because she wanted to.
Hades then questions Demeter on why she never came to him when Persephone committed her act of wrath while acknowledging the two have had a rough history. Demeter states Persephone's safety meant more to her than protecting Hades' feelings and while Hades acknowledges this, he turns his focus on defending Persephone as her lawyer.
Minthe is Hades' personal assistant and ex-girlfriend. Hades had consistently been in a very conflicting state of mind with Minthe. Hades and Minthe first met during a car show that was meant to be a quick and easy job for Minthe to have money for rent before being evicted.
Zeus and Poseidon were with their older brother who was too busy on the phone to notice Minthe until Zeus called him over, took Minthe's hat and placed it on Hades's head. Hades then left with the hat out of embarrassment. Minthe would not get paid for her job with the hat missing and with the owner claiming it was stolen, she marched herself to Underground Corp and yelled at Hades. After hearing her situation, Hades offers her a job and helps her with her living situation.
Eventually the two start to date but the relationship quickly becomes toxic. Eros would describe the two being the ultimate on again, off again dumpster fire as they were constantly arguing and break up until they eventually get back together. Despite their quarrels, Hades has shown to deeply care for Minthe, buying her expensive gifts and paying for her rent. While Minthe appears to care for Hades in her own way, her commitment issues and insecurities have caused her to become abusive towards him.
Hades' family, mainly his sister-in-law Hera, Queen of the Gods, has shown great dislike towards her, which has played a great deal of insecurities for Minthe and making her feel like "nymph trash. Despite their toxic relationship, Hades decided to propose to her and stated she would make an "okay" Queen of the Underworld. She would discover this ring and panic at the idea of becoming Queen.
Recalling is family's hatred towards her, she decides to distance herself from Hades to change his mind. When Hades calls her about the Panathenaea party, where he was going to propose, she chose not to accompany Hades and instead told him she didn't feel like being seen in public with him and that he reeked of death.
By not showing up to the party, Hades would meet Persephone, the Goddess of Spring and quickly fall for her in the brief morning they spent together.
He ghosts Minthe for the weekend after meeting Persephone and confronts his brother about the proposal situation before destroying the engagement ring. The two meet at work and while Minthe tries to be playful about not coming to the party, Hades is upset and the two argue before Hecate walks in. She then discovers an article with a picture of Persephone leaving the Hades' house which causes her to confront him out of jealously and anger.
Hades explains what really happen that night but is shocked to see this side of her and then asked her why she missed the party. While their relationship is on the rocks, she meets Persephone and sends her to Tower 4 , which puts her life at risk. Minthe is furious to see Hades carrying Persephone in his arms after saving her.
This worsens when Hades announces that Persephone is now an intern at the company and Minthe catches the two laughing and holding hands. Hades and Minthe fight to the side and ends with Hades going to take Persephone home and Minthe in tears. Later that night, Hades thinks about his day with Persephone, stating she's too perfect and starts to wonder if their growing relationship was all in his head, Minthe comes over with the fear of him leaving her for "Miss Perfect" and breaks down in tears saying they are meant to be "messed up together.
Now an official couple as stated on her Fatesbook , she takes the opportunity to kiss Hades in front of Persephone at work which only makes him uncomfortable.
Unknowingly to her, he would keep his eyes on Persephone as she spoke for the rest of the elevator ride. While he tries to keep his promise to stay away from Persephone, Hecate sets him up to give Persephone a tour and gives Minthe a call to cancel all his meetings. As Minthe talks to Thanatos, stopping their relationship at work, Hades finds himself falling for Persephone more which leads to the two almost kissing.
After seeing Hades with Persephone, she's quick to flirt with him until Persephone leaves to go home. The two make plans for dinner that night and while Hades preps and cooks, he is thinking about his day with Persephone and Thetis, jealous that her affair with Zeus is going no where, takes Minthe out for drinks, causing her to miss the date and disappoint him once more.
The next day, she calls him but he sends her to voicemail as he was talking to Persephone. A frustrated and angry Minthe arrives at work, believing Hades was with Persephone when she missed the dinner, and goes to confront him. After he tries to tell her that Thetis isn't her friend, she physically and verbally abuses him by striking him and claiming he looks like his father, Kronos, who had traumatized, scarred, and kept Hades prisoner for 13 years.
If it had not been for Hecate, Minthe would have strike again. She is quickly appalled at her own actions and is desperate to apologize, not understanding why she acts this way. Despite this attack and breaking down in tears with Hecate, Hecate only suspends her and lets Hades be the one to decide if she's fired or not. For days, Hades is struggling with his complicated feelings for Minthe and his growing love for Persephone. Hades tells his brothers that as much as he cares for Persephone, he doesn't want to cheat Minthe but Poseidon points out that his emotional affair with Persephone could be just, if not more, damaging than a physical affair.
Even after Persephone and Hades admit to having feelings for one another, they both agree that their both going through their own things and while Persephone doesn't like Minthe, she does not Minthe to be cheated on and shows real guilt over the two forming a romantic relationship when she is still in the picture.
It's not until Hades wakes up from a dream of imaging a life with Persephone where there married and have a child, that he decides to finally end things with Minthe. Despite her desire for another reconciliation, Hades tells her he wants to feel love and safe all the time.
When Minthe asks if he loves Persephone, he tells her, "As much as you can love someone you've only known for two weeks. While this statement angers and hurts him, he states that even if the relationship didn't work out, they were done.
He allows her to keep her job and apartment out of goodwill. In response, Minthe turns to manipulative tactics to win him back, even going as far to team up with Thetis an Thanatos to report Demeter and Persephone to Zeus after Demeter covered up Persephone's act of wrath. When Persephone goes missing, she cleans out Persephone's desk believing Hades has fired her as Zeus plans for Persephone's punishment. After Hermes' successful persuasion, Hades was willing to let her go but, on other hand, tricked her with a honey-sweet pomegranate seed as farewell gift.
Once eaten the seed, she became bound to the underworld and would have to return eventually. The helm of darkness or the cap of invisibility was a magical piece of armor that the Cyclopes had made specifically for Hades, during the Titanomachy, after being set free.
It enabled the user to turn invisible upon wearing it. It is also speculated that after the war, the helm received even greater power, a power of controlling the dead in the underworld. Hades borrowed his helm for a couple of times to the other gods and once to a semi-god Perseus in his quest to defeat Medusa. Athena is also noted to be wearing the helm during Trojan war to help Diomedes , while Hermes used it to fight Hippolytus in the Gigantomachy. Hades was also involved in the myth of Heracles who was in the last of his twelve labors.
The hero came to the underworld to capture Cerberus alive and bring him back before Eurystheus. When he met Hades, Heracles asked the god for permission to take away the three-headed beast from the underworld. Hades was surprised by the boldness and bravery of the hero and would let him take his pet, if he was able to wrestle and outmatch it.
In the end, Heracles was able to do just that and brought the beast back to Mycenae. There is also another version of the story in which it was Persephone who gave Cerberus to the hero as a gift for freeing Theseus and Peirithous of chains and bringing them back to the upper world. This was not the only account where Heracles met Hades.
According to Homer, the couple had been engaged engaged in a battle on the battlefield of Pylos where the hero wounded Hades who then enraged went to Olympus and complained to Zeus about it. Zeus calmed his brother down and asked Paeeon to heal him. They agreed to split their rule with Zeus becoming god of the skies, Poseidon god of the sea and Hades god of the underworld.
He was later known to the Greeks as Plouton, which the Romans pluralized to Pluto. The god of the underworld was married to Persephone , the daughter of Demeter , whom he obtained through deception after abducting her to the underworld and giving her the forbidden fruit pomegranate, forcing her to remain in the underworld with him for one third of each year.
