Paintball is a game that originated in America in the early eighties which involves teams or individual players competing against each to eliminate other players by hitting them with paint-filled pellets fired from a compressed gas powered gun, otherwise known as a marker, and complete game objectives.
Paintball games are played on indoor or outdoor fields of varying sizes. Paintball fields, or game zones, are populated with natural terrain such as trees, trenches and hills and artificial obstacles such as wooden bunkers, barricades and fortresses. Popular game objectives include capture the flag, attack and defend, total annihilation and protect the president amongst many others.
Paintball games usually last ten minutes each half but games can go on for hours, or even days depending on the paintball operator. Since Paintball began in the early eighties, it has since been considered by some to be a dangerous sport but this is far from the case.
Statistically paintball is safer than Rugby, Football and even Golf! While there are periods of sitting, hiding and waiting, there are lots of times to run, sprint, jump and move. It provides an excellent chance to get exercise and get your heart rate up.
As long as you remember to stretch, then the exercise is always going to be great for your body. Paintball is played outdoors and indoors. Our preference, though, is almost always to be outside. It's a chance to feel the sun and wind and to enjoy some quality time with mother nature. We enjoy all types of paintball, but our favorite has to be playing in the woods. It's a chance for me to really get out and enjoy some natural beauty while having fun and excitement in the process.
In paintball, you can have a good, competitive game and enjoy every minute of it. As long as you're playing with other people that have the similar goal of having fun, trying hard but not being hyper-competitive, then paintball is ideal to let out your competitive side. Paintball is considered by most to be an extreme sport due to the sport requiring participants to experience high levels of physical and mental exertion in a fast paced action pact sport that may require the player to experience some discomfort or pain.
Typical extreme sports are usually played by a single individual instead of teams and are typically judged on performance by a group of experts instead of earning points by eliminating players or hanging a flag.
While many feel like paintball would be a perfect candidate for the Olympic Sports due to it requiring discipline, having rules, and allows for competition. After the IF has presented its petition for eligibility, the sport then has to align with all the rules and regulations outlined in the Olympic Charter and align with the fundamentals of Olympic values.
Some of the minimum requirements for an Olympic sport is for men to actively participate in at least 75 countries and on 4 continents, for women to actively participate in at least 40 countries and on 3 continents, and to increase the value and appeal of the Olympic games as a whole. Paintball as a whole is diverse and played in many different formats that can vastly differ from one another with rules, gear requirements, and most importantly widespread participation.
This alone can cause its candidacy to be questioned. While paintball is indeed a team sport that promotes unity and competition, there are so many other factors that can cause it to be rejected.
