Learn about the history of sexuality and gender in Japan, how their attitudes differ from the US, and which LGBT characters challenge stereotypes. Unlike many characters who are officially characterized as crossdressing for various reasons, his did not seem like a botched or uninformed portrayal of a trans woman.

For that reason, I tend to lean more towards viewing Kuranosuke as a cisgender man, though I also very much understand the case of people who see him as a trans woman. Both interpretations, in my opinion, are perfectly valid. My thoughts hardly end there, though. Jellyfish Princess has a strong central message that seriously resonated with me.

The show is interesting in the sense that even though it relies on a lot of tropes, it also far exceeds expectations in how it handles them. In an anime centering around a group of conventionally unattractive, nerdy women, one would expect a lot of mean-spirited humor or character arcs that revolved around becoming a more socially acceptable woman.

It does tie in nicely to his portrayal though, as one of the initial themes of the anime is that femininity is subjective. To do battle, you have to dress for battle. You have to get the people who judge by appearances to stand up and take notice!

But even so, makeup and clothes cannot change who you are. He is not outed for shock value. Even if I personally do not fully view him as a trans woman, it is certainly to stretch to say that his character has a huge potential to be very empowering to trans viewers.

In the midst of several affirmations that Kuranosuke is male, there are also quite a few that rely on transmisogynistic notions and plays on familiar fears that a lot of trans women face in reality. That being said, though, I found way more to appreciate about the way Kuranosuke was handled than I did to complain about.
