The Futures School Metro Detroit gathered nearly 30 participants from industries spanning apparel, automotive, banking, higher education, oil and gas, design and beyond. They joined us from near Michigan firms — Ford, Carhartt, 24G and far two individuals from Nigeria representing executives, students, entrepreneurs and professors. This accomplished group of professionals demonstrated the power of fusing together backgrounds, expertise, generations and cultures to unleash transformational outcomes.
To apply the Natural Foresight Framework of Discovering, Exploring, Mapping and Creating the future, we put experiential learning into practice by selecting a focal issue for each cohort to analyze. I walked away from the sessions knowing I have practical skills I can apply to my human-centered design strategy work. Over the three days in Detroit, the unique TFS toolkit was used to uncover assumptions and biases; scan the external environment for drivers, trends and patterns of change; map implications to develop divergent scenarios of the focal issue; and, discuss strategic design tools.
Within small groups, participants explored the future of education through either a transformative, market or fortress world lens. Few topics elicit passionate debate like the future of education. Each TFS participant approached the focal issue from their unique perspectives framed by their background and role.
For instance, some individuals represented organizations concerned about the future of work and talent. Others were interested in how education must be reframed on a global scale to provide unbound access and immersion. In addition, it was clear this issue had both a professional and personal impact to almost everyone in the room. Cons: "2-hour delay causes me to almost miss my connection.
I know some passengers had to be transferred to different flights which they almost missed. Pros: "The Delta Help Desk at the airport was actually pretty helpful for the times I had to use them. Cons: "Flight was delayed The Rodeway Inn Metro Airport is pretty disgusting. This is my opinion after coming from remote Mexico and extensive travel in Africa. It should be torn down. Pros: "Swift travel! Pros: "Newer plane, even though it was a short flight there was a choice of movies and tv shows.
Crew was very nice. Pros: "Even though we were in the very back row, we did not experience a foul smell from the restrooms. This was a very nice relief. It is bad enough that the seats don't recline and there is no window in the very back row but prior experience with the added nausea of foul restroom order has been a serious insult to injury.
In this case there was really minimal odor. Also since we are traveling as a family we are very happy that we were seated together. We have experienced the past that sometimes our seats will be fragmented and that creates major challenges when you are traveling with young children. However on this particular flight the ride was rough during both takeoff and landing, a lot of side to side shimmy.
Also the cabin pressure varied quite a bit during landing causing all the kids to complain about some discomfort in their ears. Cons: "When I bought my ticket last Nov , I paid extra to select seats, only to discover no aisle seats available for the 15 hour flight from LAX to Guanghzou. I tried many times to call CSA LA office using toll free and regular number, but could never speak to a human.
Last November 7 I missed my flight home due to the Thai King's motorcade causing the road I was on to be closed for more one hour.
I arrived at the CNXairport nearly one hour before the scheduled departure time, only to find CSA check in counters already closed. CSA Bangkok made me pay for a one way ticket home on Nov 8 even though all 3 flights were not full. I arrived well I'm advance and checked in. CSA began boarding 30 minutes before the time shown on my boarding pass and closed the aircraft doors shortly aftethe boarding time listed. No wonder I missed my Nov 7 flight!
I wrote CSA LA a letter including the receipt for the one way ticket and requested a refund or at least a reply or home call. I never received a reply. It seems they don't care about customer loyalty. In the future CSA will not be my first choice and I will pay somewhat more to fly another airline. Pros: "The crew was nice and friendly and the plane was half empty. Cons: "When are the Airlines going to start serving a decent coffee on board? It does not matter Delta is now serving Starbucks.
Something they do that messes up the whole thing, probably overheat for too long. Pros: "Flight attendants were super. Cons: "Delta is just another cattle car". Pros: "Plane was clean, attendants were friendly, and food was fine.
Cons: "I had a flight from Detroit to Montreal. Tried to check in and DTW was not a choice on the westjet website and so I physically could not check in. I realized the flight was technically operated not by WestJet, but Gojet. Went to Gojet's website and was told that Delta took care of all of their ticketing and such.
Went to Delta's website, entered my ticket number and card number but I was not in the system as I was given all WestJet info not Delta's. Luckily the baggage check in people figured it all out. Pros: "Trip and flight crew excellent! Cons: "I understand that they couldn't deliver luggage during lightening, but my luggage and clothes were soaked!
Cons: "Boarding of all economy passengers was done on first come and stand in line, first served basis with no zone separation. This caused aisle congestion.
I was randomly asked to check in my standard size carry one although many passengers with larger bags were allowed to take them with them. Overall there was a lack of planned approach. Cons: "I like they give you a hot towels before meal to wipe your hands.
Pros: "The food was excellent, and the crew was nice". Cons: "There was a delay on the boarding and they didn't provide a reason. Pros: "There were many comforts to the plane even in economy. Pros: "Entertainment on Detroit flight was great as well as the seating, food, and crew.. Pros: "Great service, great crew!
If available, will choose Lufthansa for my next flight! Friendly crew, smooth flying, great entertainment choices. Cons: "They lost my bag". Pros: "The flight was smooth. The timing of the flight arrival and immigration was perfect.
More than enough time to clear that process. The airline crew on board was professional and pleasaht". Cons: "The seating was very close. Not enough room to sleep comfortably. Pros: "The incrediblesmoothness of the flight: the lane to Frankfortwas a dream plane, and the pilots are to be congratulated.
Cons: "Boarding was a zoo as the system was down -not very organized either. There was one crew member who was extremely rude and even as people boarded by her section did not greet people. Skipped a few rows with drinks and then told them there was no time to bring even a glass of water.
Fortunately another crew member who we also asked as they went by brought water to those she had skipped who wanted it. My TV monitor was not working. Aging planes - need a thorough cleaning. The announcements were garbled and very difficult to hear. Pros: "Crew. Courteous, engaging and supportive, of-course with a smile. Cons: "Nothing on this flight". Pros: "Crew friendly". Cons: "Waiting in the line long then expect".
Pros: "Very pleasant experience. Seats were comfortable! Nice to get a pillow and blanket at each seat. Also that the tv had a space for a USB plug! Pros: "Crews were very friendly". Pros: "Flight was on time, boarding went smoothly. Seats not too comfy, knee room seems to be shrinking with every flight transatlantic routes mostly.

Stewards were very nice. Cons: "Our seats were at the very back and the flight was quite bumpy at times. It left a bit late due to passengers not showing up and having to remove luggage. They wouldn't allow my husband to use his backpack as a personal item he had to count it as a carryon despite others having more carryon items. Received headphones, a pillow and a blanket for the flight. Legroom was good, but probably cramped for people over 6'0" tall. I like having the boarding pass on my phone.
No paper to carry around. Pros: "Service is outstanding in economy and puts US airlines to shame. Lufthansa is the best way to fly to Europe. Cons: "Clearing passport control in Frankfurt is very slow. The setup is not very good for a world class airport.
You need to give yourself at least an hour. Pros: "Roomy seats and good space between rows. Didn't have the feel of being on a cattle car like most flights in the US". Cons: "Boarding process. Cons: "Not well organized and food is unhealthy". Pros: "The Lufthansa flight and crew were fantastic. Nice plane with amenities. It was far better than our return flight on Air Canada. Cons: "My return on Air Canada. Cons: "Being asked, when other passengers were around me, how much money I cary with me.
This is a dangerous thing. I don't know whom I travel with, and I felt at risk knowing that other people know how much cash I have with me.
Plus, the money were counted on the passageway to the plane, with people walking by. I strongly believe that you should change the method you ask and check passengers for cash. I heard other details that I shouldn't hear from another women who was also checked.
Cons: "Being put in a distanced place for boarding". Cons: "We couldnt fly because our name was in different order and they didnt want to change the order of our names. Pros: "The flight from DTW to FRA was made that much better by a particular flight attendant who actually remembered it was my first time flying. She checked with me personally as we were disembarking in FRA to see how my flight was.
I unfortunately did not catch her name, but she was the highlight of the flight. If I fly again, I will definitely fly Lufthansa for flight crew like her. I skipped the evening meal as I was feeling unwell, but I had the breakfast. The fresh fruit, and especially the watermelon was delicious. There just wasn't enough of it. Cons: "The seat cushion was rather stiff and made the 8-hour-long flight just a tad uncomfortable.
Pros: "The staff were excellent. Very friendly and accommodating. She made my wife and feel vey comfortable. Very attentive. We also trust Lufthansa to be on top of things".
Cons: "Sitting in a plane on a long flight but the staff made it easier and the entertainment options were very good. Pros: "On time and friendly crew". Pros: "The food was good and the crew members were very friendly and caring. Cons: "My flight was delayed by about 2 hours but we still made it to Germany with enough time to catch the Moscow flight and check out the duty free stores.
Cons: "Poor cabin crew behavior. Gate agent kind of reprimanded passengers to carry only one bag to cabin almost shouting at people in Frankfurt. Pros: "The live streaming of the NBA finals game on the flight was excellent. Cons: "The check in process was incredibly inefficient. I have never had to wait so long to check in my bags. The attendants were chatting and laughing while not helping customers and customers were unfairly taken from the middle of the line to jump the queue.
Pros: "Boarding process, food and entertainment were excellent. Cons: "Seats seemed a little small, even for economy. Pros: "Food and eating with proper utensils, Brandy after dinner". Cons: "Entrainment center glitch. Headphone quality. Pros: "Great flight service, lots of good food, and plenty of fluids. Pros: "Staff were polite". Cons: "The seating space is horrendous, I am 5 ft 8 and felt like I was sitting with my knees at my chest, horrible horrible seating".
Pros: "This Transavia Airlines is not good at all. Cons: "Many things cheaper does mean better. Cons: "Allow business passenger to use front bathroom. The staff were very friendly". Cons: "Bigger seats the new ones are way to narrow". Pros: "Impressive service Pros: "Everything works and quick to get to destination. Pros: "The crew was informative". Cons: "Inflight sandwiches". There was nothing to like. In past I have traveled by KLM but this time it was worst. Cons: "No proper food service. Even to the passenger of Amsterdam no dinner was served. No inflight service. It looks like domestic flight. I will think twice to travel by KLM. The check-in staff at counter was absolutely arrogant.
Staff ar boarding gate was nice. Pros: "Crew was amazing. They adjusted the seating arrangements so there was an empty seat in every row to give passengers more space. Very thoughtful and much appreciated.
They served delicious meals, snacks, and water. They provided headphones, blankets and pillows. They took very good care of us. Pros: "The flight crew was so friendly and the food was really good. Cons: "Dozens of high school students screaming and climbing onto seats, crew did not intervene.
Pros: "The crew was amazing and the food was great. Cons: "Something did not go right with our booking so it took some work for the airline to get it figured out for us.
Thankfully we had left plenty of time. But that was an unexpected stress. Pros: "Everything was good except for the entertainment consul for one of our seats.
We gave up asking. Pros: "The crew were very nice, food was tasty, seat comfortable and the entertainment great as well. Will be flying KLM again soon : ". Pros: "Friendly staff". Too Long!!!! Cons: "Why do the crew have to slam the overhead and catering compartments to get them to shut? Cons: "One of the senior stewardesses we're very rude. Whether it's her personal opinion or KLM's policy, it's unreasonable to think that a 3 years old child could or should hold her pipi over 20 minutes, while they slowly and inefficiently trying to give out food.
Several parents were there with the request to let us through to the toilet with small children and she smiled in our face and said "no, we will finish first and than you can go".
She might be not fit for the job anymore, but KLM can't afford this kind of treatment. Cons: "KLM had bumped us to a later flight for no reason and again we had to call with a long wait to get our original connection restored, However, we did not get boarding passes during checking in Europe and thus had to go outside security in Detroit to the main check-in gate and wait 30 minutes to get the error resolved.
Then it was back thorough security and a rush to the gate to get there in time to board. Lost our original seat assignment and wound up in the last row at the tail of the plane.
Extremely poor coordination between KLM and Delta who operated the flight. Pros: "Efficiency and speed of boarding was acceptable. I have no complaints about that aspect. Cons: "The first announcement they made to all of us in the economy section was thay they did not have any headphones for anyone but business class. I was told when I booked the seat that the headphones would be complementary.
So I did not bother to bring any assuming they were going to keep their word; I figure I'd make it work and watch a movie without sound. If that isn't bad enough midway through my nine hour flight my monitor went out and would not turn back on. Pros: "Short flight friendly crew". Cons: "Good flight nothing to complain about. Was spoiled by the entertainment choices on the longer flights. Pros: " The transfer at JFK was terrible". Pros: "Almost missed flight due to line at customs and having to pick up suitcase and check in again, they did wait for me though".
Pros: "Entertainment, cabin crew great. Cons: "Seat layout may now be standard but is still cramped. Cons: "Stranded for 48 hours in Africa. Missed 3 flights due to complete incompetence, truly a horrible experience. Pros: "Food was relatively good". Cons: "We had ourtrip from San Francisco to Amsterdam which is one of the longest flights ever, andthe entertainment system wasnt working, we kept on telling them several times but nothing happened and at the end they wereeven avoiding us.

The one popping up from below one's seat is extremely hard to put back in place.
This seems to be a new appliance, and I jut wish they would do away with it altogether. More is not necessarily better. Pros: "The seats were bigger across the shoulder area and had more padding than some other budget airlines.
Cons: "Wish there was more elbow room in the seat. I am a big guy and I was having to squish myself so as to not interfere with my neighbor". Cons: "Seat angle adjustment was not the most comfortable for sleeping. Pros: "Seats are comfortable on Business Class. Service is good". Cons: "Constant delays specially from CDG! Poor cabin service specially on this flight. Pros: "Crew was great. Seats were comfortable. Cons: "The airline lost both of my luggage suitcases.
Pros: "Crew very professional". Cons: "Boarding was a little confusing". Pros: "Average crew. Average seat. Cons: "They could have controlled screening babies better. They just let them scream Pros: "Crew was wonderful and welcoming! Cons: "Surprised one flight that from what it looked to be, once flight took off a older couple came out of the cockpit are and took a seat in business class.
I thought I had seen someone in civilian clothes setting in a area right behind the pilots chair. They did return to cockpit area near end of flight". Pros: "It was only 2 hours". Cons: "Small plane, no movies". Cons: "they lost our luggage very inconvenient". Cons: "Flying back to US, passsengers get charged for their luggage. Which this is not informed to us, neither On our email nor when we were checking for free in Us". Pros: "Good selection of movies".
Pros: "Flight attendant Ms. Sophie Picard made every extra effort to try to find a meal when they had run out of Business Class meals. She made up for the uncomfortable seating in Business Class. Cons: "Business class seating on the AirBus is very cramped. Cons: "Our flight was delayed so we could not make out connecting flight.
We had to wait 6 hours get another flight to Atlanta and then fly to Boston the next day, longest flight ever was horrible I called out sick from work too. Pros: "That we were heading home. Nice seats. Good food. Lots of entertainment choices. Power plugs USB and European power were appreciated. Wine as a choice with meal was appreciated and brandy after the meal.
Cons: "Some of the shows and movies were a bit 'trashy'. Long flight. I was in the middle seat next to an inattentive octanegarian who was nice but kept calling the flight crew to fix her mess up of the video system. No air controls on this plane - so it was overly warm. Pros: "Very nice stews. Great list of movies etc. Pros: "25 min ahead schedule!!! Cons: "Cabin space, too narrow rows. Cons: "Entertainment screen did not work; in neighboring seat it could not be switched off when we wanted to sleep; sourly employees everywhere re-booking counter an exception ; food close not being edible and cold; I forgot my watch on when going through security in the Air France terminal; when I started to say "sorry" I was yelled at by the screener who said that she will do the talking; she sent me back through the scanner twice without my watch, then once more with the carry-on and made sure that I went to the end of a very long line to wait for another screening rather than having me just go through the scanner without my watch.
Needless to say, there was nothing else suspicious about me once the watch was removed. Eager to exercise her power, the security person did not seem to consider that she slowed down a long line of people waiting to be screened.
