The use of glycolic acid in superficial chemical peels is well established, but its usefulness in medium-depth chemical peels is unclear. This study compared Jessner's solution and glycolic acid for medium-depth chemical peels in 13 patients with actinic damage. Clinical and histologic changes were followed for two months.

No statistically significant differences between the two sides were found. Clinically, the GA-TCA side showed slightly better improvement of actinic damage, and histologically, this side showed a slightly thicker papillary dermis and more elastin. Clinically, the JS-TCA side had longer-lasting erythema, and histologically, it showed dermal fibrosis and neovascularization. Pigmentary alteration, prolonged erythema, delayed healing, scar, or milia did not develop on either side, and rhytides remained mostly unchanged.

Neither peel is useful for the treatment of acne scars or rhytides. A larger study is needed to determine if any of the advantages of the GA-TCA peel noted in this study are real or merely chance events. After that, the swelling will go down and your skin will begin peeling. Your skin may darken or even develop brown patches during this time, but the spots rarely stay after the skin has healed.

Once the skin begins peeling off, new smooth skin will be revealed. It can take five to seven days after a medium peel to develop new skin, and the redness can last for months in some cases. Generally, it will take 7—14 days to heal completely and see the full results of the peel. Your skin will continue to age with time and sun exposure; acne can create new scars; and you may develop new spots of hyperpigmentation. If you are bothered by the redness and peeling of your skin, you can wear makeup to cover it once your skin is no longer irritated.

From treating acne to reducing the appearance of freckles, sun damage, dark spots, and scars, the Jessner peel can leave you with smoother, more even-toned skin. Will rolling cool jade stones over your face really help your skin?
